Wildlife Volunteering: In Their Words

What drives someone to volunteer with a wildlife hospital? For International Volunteer Day, our TWH volunteers shared their thoughts, favourite moments, and even which Tassie animal they relate to most.

What inspired you to volunteer with wildlife at TWH?

“To have a purpose back in my life, after shifting states and ending an awesome career. After spending time volunteering in some Tasmanian Wildlife parks, TWH hit the nail on the head. Rehabilitate and release.”

I'm a forest defender and citizen scientist which is both awesome and depressing in equal measure because so much is being lost right now when it's more important than ever to protect what's left. The TWH is a brilliant place and helping care for the animals is a really positive way to help with eco-anxiety.”

“Volunteering with wildlife is my absolute joy. So when we were finally making the move to Tassie this year I looked up the hospital and put in my interest for the next volley intake before we’d even moved. It gives me a sense of purpose that is deeply satisfying.”

What do you enjoy most or what is your favourite memory so far while working?

‘The best thing so far is meeting like minded people and watching and learning each animals behaviours.’

“Pelican and Sea Eagle releases. That's why we exist. To get our iconic wildlife back out to traverse their home range. And I love spending time with like minded people.”

‘Honestly I enjoy it all. I love talking with all the animals as I clean and feed and being able to catch, hold and help feed the wedge-tail has been awe inspiring. Meeting the swift parrot was a possible once in a lifetime gift too, though bittersweet now.’

If you could be any Tasmanian animal (current or extinct), what would you be? And why, if you’d like to add that.

“Quoll. They are beautiful, slinky, mysterious animals and so free spirited in the way they roam around the landscape.”

“Wedge tailed eagle. I'd fly to Eric Abetz and let him share an up close and personal moment with me. I'd show him that sweet spot, where wildlife, forests, economics and human life all coexist.”

“Quoll, without hesitation (anyone who’s seen my car would know) Probably a maculatus. They’re strong, fierce, loving and intelligent.”

“Wedge tailed eagle - powerful smart and have an absolute presence to them.”

Wombat

because they are adorable, poo square nuggets, are built like tank and have gorgeous big butts.”
